Guides Best pellet stoves
Best pellet stoves Picked on tested output and efficiency
The PelPro PP130 is the pellet stove to beat on paper: 82% HHV, 40,637 BTU/hr tested and a 130 lb hopper from $1,819. The ComfortBilt HP22 matches it on output with honest advertising. The Harman P43 is the premium dealer pick, and the Castle Serenity suits one room on a budget.
How these picks work: we compared the pellet stoves in our database on what can be sourced: the EPA certification listing (tested output, HHV efficiency, emissions), the maker's manual and product page, hopper size and published price. We don't do hands-on testing, so reliability and service experience aren't part of these rankings.
What r/PelletStoveTalk Asks
Sizing and cost dominate: “House just over 1,500 sq ft. Is this a good option? Any other suggestions?” (thread), “Pellet Stove Sizing Question” (thread), where a buyer weighs a Harman P43 for a basement in the Adirondacks, and “Cost to run a Pellet Stove” (thread). Efficiency claims cause confusion too (How much does efficiency matter?). The picks below answer those questions with the certified numbers.

Common questions
What size pellet stove do I need?
Pellet stove ratings are usually heat input, so start from the EPA-tested maximum. At 35 BTU/hr per square foot (Castle’s sizing rule), 40,637 BTU/hr covers about 1,160 sq ft. Run your own heat load in the calculator.
How many bags of pellets will I burn?
At USDA’s 16.4 million BTU per ton and an 80% HHV stove, a 100 million BTU season takes about 7.6 tons, or roughly 380 forty-pound bags. Most homes use 50 to 150 million BTU a season, per USDA. The fuel calculator adjusts for your stove and season.
Do pellet stoves work in a power outage?
No. A pellet stove needs electricity for its auger, combustion fan and controls. Plan on a battery backup or generator if outages are common where you live.
Which pellets can I burn?
Only pellets your manual specifies and graded under an EPA-approved program (PFI, ENplus or CANplus), per the federal rule. See EPA rules in 2026.
