Every stove we track Advertised next to EPA-tested

The maker’s BTU, square footage and efficiency claims beside the output range and HHV efficiency each stove earned in its EPA certification test, with the gap worked out for you.

This table puts the twelve stoves in our database side by side: eight wood stoves and four pellet stoves, from budget box-store models to premium catalytic stoves. EPA columns come from the EPA Certified Wood Heater Database, the certification record every new wood or pellet heater sold in the US has to be in. Maker columns come from each brand’s product page, brochure or owner’s manual. Cells marked not yet verified are gaps we haven’t been able to source.

Reading the Table

  • Advertised ÷ tested. How many times bigger the headline BTU number is than the EPA-tested maximum. The US Stove 2000 is the extreme at 2.61 times; the Woodstock Ideal Steel and ComfortBilt HP22 advertise their EPA figures directly. Anything above about 1.5 is usually a cordwood maximum or a fuel input figure, explained in stove BTU ratings explained.
  • Efficiency, EPA HHV. The EPA figure is a weighted average across four burn rates on the higher heating value basis. Makers often print the lower heating value figure, which reads five or six points higher for the same test. See HHV vs LHV efficiency.
  • Tested BTU/hr per sq ft. The EPA maximum divided by the top of the advertised area. It’s a quick check on how generous the square-footage claim is. Castle’s own manual sizes at 35 BTU/hr per sq ft for a post-1982 house; every stove here advertises an area that works out below that, from 13.8 (Blaze King Princess) to 29.0 (Drolet Escape 1500). The calculator lets you set your own heat load.
  • Particulate. Grams of smoke per hour in the certification test. The 2020 limit is 2.0 g/hr on crib wood or 2.5 g/hr on cordwood (40 CFR 60.532).

Wood Stoves vs Pellet Stoves on Paper

The eight wood stoves span 9,800 to 55,662 BTU/hr in testing, and the catalytic and hybrid models (Blaze King, Woodstock, Jøtul, HearthStone, Lopi) cluster at 76% to 82% HHV. The three non-catalytic stoves sit at 68% to 71%, which matches the database as a whole: across all 156 wood stove listings, the non-cat median is 71% and the catalytic median is 78%. Catalytic vs non-catalytic has the full breakdown.

The four pellet stoves test between 22,266 and 40,689 BTU/hr at the top end. Pellet stove headline numbers are usually heat input (pounds of pellets per hour times the energy in a pound), so the gap between advertised and tested output is smaller than for wood but still real.
