Guides Best wood stoves

Best wood stoves Picked on tested output and efficiency

For long, steady burns, the Blaze King Princess PE32 has one of the highest tested efficiencies on file (82% HHV). For a bigger or colder house, the Woodstock Ideal Steel 210b has the most tested output of the wood stoves we cover (55,662 BTU/hr) at a published $3,590. For a simple non-catalytic stove, the Pacific Energy Super LE has the clearest spec sheet, and the Drolet Escape 1500 is the honest budget pick.

Last checked October 21, 2026

How these picks work: we ranked the wood stoves in our database on what can be sourced: the EPA certification listing (tested output, HHV efficiency, emissions), the maker's manual and spec pages, and how honestly each one is advertised. We don't do hands-on testing, so burn times and real-world output below are the makers' figures unless the EPA measured them.

Common questions

What size wood stove do I need?

Work out your heat load (square footage times BTU/hr per square foot) and pick a stove whose EPA-tested maximum covers it with room to spare. At Castle’s 35 BTU/hr rule, 1,500 sq ft needs 52,500 BTU/hr; only the Ideal Steel and Escape 1500 get close on tested output. Most stoves are better as the main heat for a smaller zone. The calculator runs the numbers.

Catalytic or non-catalytic?

Catalytic and hybrid stoves average 7 to 8 points higher on HHV efficiency in the EPA database and burn cleaner at low output. Non-cats are simpler and cheaper. See catalytic vs non-catalytic.

Is there still a tax credit?

Not for stoves placed in service after December 31, 2025. See the 25C guide.

Which wood stove burns the longest?

Burn time isn’t part of the EPA test, so every figure is the maker’s. Blaze King claims up to 30 hours on low for the Princess; Woodstock says 10 to 14 hours for the Ideal Steel; Lopi up to 14 hours for the Evergreen; Drolet up to 7 hours for the Escape 1500.
