Our Read
The Oslo is the classic Scandinavian-style cast-iron stove that many hearth.com regulars still recommend for mid-size homes. The V3 adds Jøtul’s Fusion combustor, which runs without a bypass, so there’s no damper lever to forget.
Jøtul is one of the clearer makers on paper. The manual prints the tested range (13,200 to 37,000 BTU/hr), a separate 70,000 BTU/hr maximum with a footnote saying it assumes more frequent reloading than the EPA test, and both HHV (78.40%) and LHV (84.73%) efficiency. The EPA listing itself is a little higher on output, at 14,001 to 38,804 BTU/hr.
At 78% HHV it met the old 75% threshold for the 25C tax credit, but that credit ended for stoves placed in service after December 31, 2025.
Bottom line: A well-documented cast-iron cat stove with long log capacity. Size it on the 38,804 BTU/hr tested maximum unless you plan to reload often.
Maker Claims vs the EPA Listing
"Max. heat output: 70,000 BTU/hr", which the manual says represents "a more frequent re-fueling cycle than specified in the EPA High Heat Output test" F 500 V3 manual (R22)
38,804 BTU/hr maximum in the EPA listing EPA listing
Jøtul explains its maximum honestly: it's what you get by reloading often. For an overnight load, the tested range is the better guide.
13,200–37,000 BTU/hr in the manual's specification table F 500 V3 manual (R22)
14,001–38,804 BTU/hr in the current EPA listing EPA listing
Small mismatch, likely from rounding or an earlier test. The EPA figures are what we show in the tables.
HHV 78.40%, LHV 84.73% F 500 V3 manual (R22)
78% HHV in the EPA listing EPA listing
Both numbers printed side by side, with a correct footnote on the difference. The HHV figure matches EPA.
