Advertised vs EPA-Tested Output

BTU/hr. The advertised figure is 65,000 BTU/h maximum on dry cordwood sourcechecked 2026-10-21 The EPA range is the tested low and high burn rate from the 1.7R Series: Blackcomb II, Escape 1500, Deco II, Columbia II, Savannah II, Osburn 1700 and others listing (9,800–52,200 BTU/hr EPAchecked 2026-10-21 ). Why the numbers differ.

Our Read

The Escape 1500 is part of SBI’s 1.7R model line, which also covers the Drolet Deco II and Blackcomb II and the Osburn 1700. It is a common first stove: no catalyst, a pedestal with an ash drawer, and 18-inch logs.

Unlike most stoves here, this line was certified on cordwood, so the EPA output (9,800 to 52,200 BTU/h) is close to Drolet’s own 65,000 BTU/h cordwood maximum. Drolet’s FAQ is the plainest explanation from any maker of why the two numbers differ.

The trade-offs are on paper too: 68% HHV efficiency and 2.4 g/h, close to the 2.5 g/h cordwood limit, and a 7-hour burn claim. That’s normal for a non-cat at this price.

Bottom line: An honest, simple stove for small to mid-size spaces. Its numbers are close to real-world cordwood output because that’s what it was tested on.

Our read

Only 1.25 times the tested maximum, the smallest gap among stoves advertised on a cordwood figure, because this model line was certified on cordwood rather than crib wood. Drolet's FAQ explains the difference plainly.

Efficiency: maker says

68% HHV average, 73% LHV, and a 76% "optimum" figure at one burn rate Drolet product page (DB03135)

On file

68% HHV in the EPA listing EPA listing

Our read

Three numbers, all labeled. The one to compare across stoves is the 68% HHV average.

Emissions: maker says

"Only 2.4 g/h of particulate emissions" Drolet product page (DB03135)

On file

2.5 g/hr is the 2020 limit for cordwood-certified heaters 40 CFR 60.532

Our read

Compliant, but the highest emission rate of the twelve stoves we cover and close to the cordwood limit.

Burn time: maker says

Up to 7 hours Drolet product page (DB03135)

On file

Drolet's own FAQ says the maximum output lasts about a third of the burn cycle Drolet wood stove FAQ

Our read

A realistic claim, and Drolet explains how burn times are counted.

What We Haven't Checked

  • Current list price (sold through retailers).
  • Real-world output in your house, which depends on wood moisture, chimney draft and how you run the stove. Nobody's lab number covers that.
