Advertised vs EPA-Tested Output

BTU/hr. The advertised figure is 9,323–43,263 BTU/hr "per EPA cord wood 2020 tests" (product page); 10,409–55,662 BTU/hr (210b manual) sourcechecked 2026-10-21 The EPA range is the tested low and high burn rate from the Ideal Steel Hybrid 210b listing (10,409–55,662 BTU/hr EPAchecked 2026-10-21 ). Why the numbers differ.

Our Read

Woodstock sells the Ideal Steel direct from Vermont at $3,590 list, which is unusual in a dealer-driven market and one reason it comes up so often when people ask for a big cat stove under $4,000.

The current model is the 210b, certified on crib wood at 10,409 to 55,662 BTU/hr, 0.70 g/hr and 76% HHV. The product page still quotes the older 210a cordwood certificate (9,323 to 43,263 BTU/hr, 0.89 g/hr, 77%). Neither number is wrong; they describe two tests with different fuel, and that difference is a good lesson in why one stove can carry two output ranges.

Woodstock rates it for up to 2,200 sq ft, one of the most conservative area claims per BTU among the wood stoves here. The 22-inch log length and front-to-back or side-to-side loading are the practical draws for anyone cutting their own wood.

Bottom line: The big-firebox cat stove to beat on value, with a conservative area rating. Check the manual’s 210b figures, not the product page’s older 210a numbers.

Maker Claims vs the EPA Listing

Heat output: maker says

9,323–43,263 BTU/hr and 0.89 g/hr "per EPA cord wood 2020 tests" Woodstock product page

On file

10,409–55,662 BTU/hr and 0.70 g/hr for the current model 210b, tested on crib wood EPA listing

Our read

The product page still lists the earlier 210a cordwood certificate. The 210b manual and the EPA listing agree on the crib wood figures. Same firebox, different test fuel: crib wood is the dimensional lumber test load, cordwood is split logs.

Efficiency: maker says

77% HHV on the product page; 82.79% LHV and 76.94% HHV on the 210a spec sheet Model 210a manual, specs

On file

76% HHV in the EPA listing for the 210b EPA listing

Our read

Woodstock is one of the few makers that printed both numbers. The six-point gap between LHV and HHV on the same test is typical.

Heating area: maker says

Up to 2,200 sq ft Model 210b manual, specs

On file

55,662 BTU/hr maximum tested output EPA listing

Our read

One of the most conservative area ratings here: about 25 BTU/hr of tested output per square foot at the top of the range. Only the Drolet Escape 1500 is more conservative.

What We Haven't Checked

  • Current shipping lead time (the product page gave a November–December 2026 ship window on the day we checked).
  • Real-world output in your house, which depends on wood moisture, chimney draft and how you run the stove. Nobody's lab number covers that.
