Advertised vs EPA-Tested Output

BTU/hr. The advertised figure is Up to 89,000 BTUs sourcechecked 2026-10-21 The EPA range is the tested low and high burn rate from the US2000 Model Line (AW2020, US2000-L, US2000-P, VG2020E and others) listing (11,565–34,130 BTU/hr EPAchecked 2026-10-21 ). Why the numbers differ.

Our Read

The US2000 is the kind of stove you find at big-box stores and farm stores, and US Stove sells it direct at $1,099.99 for the pedestal version. The certified model line is long: the AW2020, VG2020E and KW2000 variants share the same listing.

It also carries the widest gap between advertised and tested output of any stove we cover. The product page says “up to 89,000 BTUs”. The EPA listing tops out at 34,130 BTU/hr. US Stove is open about why: the manual says advertised BTUs are “based on the first hour of operation at high burn rate burning cordwood”, and its FAQ describes the number as maximum BTU input.

Read that way, the stove is fine for what it costs: 70% HHV and 1.6 g/hr are typical non-cat numbers. Just size it like a 34,000 BTU/hr stove, not an 89,000 one.

Bottom line: A budget stove that works best as supplemental heat or in a smaller, tighter house. Ignore the 89,000 BTU headline.

Our read

The biggest gap of any stove we cover: 2.6 times the tested maximum. The manual says the advertised figure comes from "the first hour of operation at high burn rate burning cordwood", and the FAQ calls it maximum BTU input.

Our read

About 17 BTU/hr of tested output per square foot at 2,000 sq ft. Fine for a shoulder-season or supplemental stove, thin as the main heat in a cold climate.

Our read

A 20 BTU/hr transcription difference. Harmless, but it shows why we pull numbers from the listing itself.

What We Haven't Checked

  • Retail prices outside usstove.com (Home Depot, Lowe's and Tractor Supply carry US Stove models).
  • Real-world output in your house, which depends on wood moisture, chimney draft and how you run the stove. Nobody's lab number covers that.
